Christian Schad (1894-1982), Germany Retrospective
I didn’t know much about Schad, but I was really impressed by the hypnotizing eyes observing you from the canvas.
Schad knew different styles. He was influenced by painters like Kokoschka and Kandinsky and painted his first expressionistic painting in Volendam in 1914.
Cubism, realism, magic realism, he tried them all, probably because of lack of commercial successes. However his New Objectivity period is most seen in his works and at this expo.
Schad also created his Schadography: simply contour pictures and text on photo paper.
