Hermanus Berserik – The world under a bell jar / De wereld onder een stolp
Museum MORE (Modern Realism) is a nice small museum with a beautiful collection of dutch contemporary art. The museum is related to Ruurlo Castle, where Carel Willink’s works are permanently exhibited.
Herman Berserik was born in The Hague (1921) where he also died in 2002. He was educated at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, mostly during the second worldwar. Later he was a teacher at this academy, from 1958 till 1978.
Most of his works represent still lifes and landscapes. His style reminds me of the naives, but his work is considered to be part of the New Hague School. But he is also one of the most import Dutch graphic artists of the 20th century.
Many of his paintings are filled with humor, the ordinary things, poetry. The meaning of small things like a glitter on the water, flowers in a vase, a beautiful summer sky made him happy.
His art is accessible, easily recognizable. You do not have to look for a deeper meaning.
The naive work of Berserik is not only why I was visiting this exhibition. The MORE collection offers more. Therefore I could not leave without a few examples in this blog from Pyke Koch, Edgar Fernhout and Charley Toorop.
